What is ACT?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an evidence-based approach that helps people live more fully by teaching them how to accept difficult thoughts and feelings rather than fight or avoid them. Instead of trying to "fix" or eliminate emotional pain, ACT focuses on building a meaningful life even in the presence of challenges.
How does ACT work?
ACT helps clients develop psychological flexibility. This focuses on increasing the ability to stay present and take action guided by values, even during emotional or mental discomfort. The core components include:
Acceptance of thoughts and feelings without judgment
Cognitive defusion, or changing how we relate to unhelpful thoughts
Being present through mindfulness and awareness techniques
Self-as-context, seeing yourself as more than your thoughts or experiences
Values clarification to identify what truly matters
Committed action toward goals that align with those values
What does ACT help?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is effective for a wide range of mental health concerns and life challenges. It’s especially helpful for people who feel stuck in unhelpful thought patterns or who struggle to move forward due to emotional pain. ACT can support individuals dealing with:
Anxiety and stress
Chronic pain or illness
Depression
Life transitions or identity concerns
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Low self-esteem or self-criticism
Trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
None of the above symptoms or experiences fit you?
Do you experience distressing emotions that appear to you, and perhaps to others, to be excessive given the current situation? Do you tend to be highly reactive to certain triggers? Is there one or more dysfunctional beliefs that you believe about yourself that on an intellectual level you know is not true?
If so, you may still be a good candidate for ACT therapy. Contact us today for a free 30 minute video consultation call to see if ACT might help you build resilience while taking meaningful steps toward a more fulfilling life.
