EMDR Series 14 - Phase 7 of EMDR

Phase 7 of EMDR is called Closure. This phase is done at the end of every session, regardless if Phase 5 and Phase 6 are completed. During Closure, the client and clinician have the opportunity to talk about what was experienced in the reprocessing session.

I prefer to begin winding down a reprocessing session with about 10-15 minutes left in the session regardless of completing a target or not. This will allow ample time for any Phase 2 techniques (i.e., Peaceful Place, Container, Light Stream), breathing techniques, and grounding exercises. I also find that this helps the client reorient fully into the present, ready to move about the rest of their day.

I explore with clients if anything stood out or was interesting about their reprocessing today. I also love to ask clients if there is anything they can honor about themselves after the session today.

I wrap up Closure with the reminder that reprocessing may still continue, clients may experience increased dreams for the next few nights, and to utilize any coping skills as needed between sessions.
